The Northern Lights Project was driven by connection and re-connection. This destination resort was designed to encourage visitors to connect with one another, as well as with the natives of Iceland. The design process began with the creation of diagrams in order to better understand the aurora borealis and the building site near Lake Mývatn. To accommodate flexibility and allow users to select their own locations, the guest houses were designed as fully-functional tiny houses.

DOUBLE TINY HOUSE PLAN

In order to accommodate an array of visitors, two tiny houses were designed. The single tiny house plan boasts a double bed fit for a lone traveler or a couple looking to get away. The double tiny house was designed to lodge a small family or a group of friends traveling to re-connect with one another. Within the two story design are two double beds, as well as a pull out sofa. Both housing plans have a full wet bathroom in addition to a small kitchenette sure to fit any needs.

TINY HOUSE CONNECTION

The connection point of the tiny houses is crucial to the design. Large stationary decks are dispersed throughout the site so that guests may dock up to three tiny houses together and experience the aurora borealis as a community.

GUEST HUB PLAN

The guest hub hosts amenities that foster a sense of connection. Upon entering the building, guests are greeted by a dual-sided fireplace and sunken living room where they are able to share stories or curl up with a book. A gourmet kitchen provides ample space for people to cook meals with one another or for a local chef to cook for the group. Several dining space options allow for the users to select who they would like to interact with. For the summer months, a large patio is located off of the dining room and bar in order to connect the indoor and outdoor space. A large spa bathroom provides all of the amenities needed to relax after a long day of exploring.
